Westbury History

The first settlers arrived in this region in the year 1658, when the area was known as the Hempstead Plains. Most of the early settlers were Quakers. The village of Westbury was officially incorporated in 1932. It is now in the Town of North Hempstead.

The village of Westbury affords easy access to a number of historical sites and museums. The former estate of John S. Phipps, called Old Westbury Gardens, has around 160 acres of gardens and landscaped grounds. The Roslyn Grist Mill, African American Museum, Fine Arts Museum of Long Island and Nassau County Museum of Art provide valuable information about the local history and culture. The Long Island Children's Museum is also a good place to plan a trip with youngsters. One can also pay a visit to the Belmont Park race track, the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium or the Squirrel Sanctuary Inc.
